Manchester United will be wishing for defenders this Christmas.

Article by Ben Carso

Saturdays defeat to Fulham was waiting to happen. Manchester United normally acquire a win when they put out a makeshift team but this did not work against a very in-form Fulham side.

United had again have to play with just one recognised first team defender with Patrice EVra at left back. Ritchie de Laet, the 21 year old defender was also involved but his inexperience showed as Fulham bolted up the midfield letting no one past.

With Fletcher and Carrick once again playing at full backs one could sense this Saturday afternoon was going to be tough against a team that are in such good form both in the Europa League and the Premiership. Nonetheless Manchester will be hoping their full strength first team defenders will be back as soon as possible as without them the title could be out of reach by the end of January.

How Manchester United now handle this situation over the next two weeks will be of great interest, none moreso than that of Chelsea who have a chance to go six points clear on Sunday afternoon versus West Ham. United will need to regroup, hope that maybe just one fo their first team defenders returns to the fray and solids things up at the back.

The likes of Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans and Gary Neville are players that any team would miss badly should they be injured. Liverpool are like a bad egg without two players, Gerrard and Torres, let alone a the full back 4 and then some.

The title will still go down to the wire, there will be more dropped points and Chelsea will really try and take advantage of Uniteds current situation as it will not go on forever. Regardless of who supports who this season it has to be said that this Premiership season is probably the most exciting there has been, top and bottom since the Premiership was formed, and one may expect a “final game of the season” climax. Saturdays result, with Sunday aside has pushed Chelsea to 2/1 on at the best online bookmakers.
