Gerrard thinks Liverpool can still contend

Steven Gerrard reckons that even after losing the golden boot winner of the last season, Luis Suarez, Liverpool is a contender for the Premier League silverware in the ongoing season.
The Reds could have ended their 2-decade long league title drought last season as they were in a great position with just a couple more games to go, but, in what turned out to be a title deciding encounter, they lost to Chelsea leading to the heartbreak of the club fans.
That win of Chelsea gave Manchester City the much needed advantage and they capitalized on that to end up leaving Liverpool behind by just 2 points.
City’s goal differential was better too. So, even if it was a tie in terms of points, they would have won, but, two games prior to that, the situation was much different with Liverpool being in a comfortable situation at the top. It was their title to lose and they lost it unfortunately.
However, Gerrard seems to have forgotten what happened in 2013-14. He has his sights on future only and he is of the view that his team has got the right kind of blend to go close to the title or even win it this time around.
Talking to the reporters last week, the Reds skipper said, “It’s absolutely vital to remain in the European Cup, but, that doesn’t mean we will be content with a top 4 finish only. We are going to fight for the title. We know it’s within our reach especially after the way we carried on our campaign the previous season. If we play that way again, we’ll be real contenders.”
Liverpool has had a decent start in the league this season as they have won 2 out of their first 3 games. The remaining one they lost against Manchester City.

Gerrard Takes Much Needed Holiday

Steven Gerrard has had an interesting last 3-4 months. From being on the verge of lifting the league trophy to travel to Brazil to captain the Three Lions to their worst ever outing in a FIFA World Cup, the midfielder has gone through a lot. After all this, he was surely in need of going on a short holiday and he has done exactly that.

He is in Ibiza at the moment spending some time with his wife and his kids. In some of his recent photographs that have been uploaded on websites, he is looking relaxed and rejuvenated which is a good thing at least for his club Liverpool. The Reds would certainly need their captain at his best next season if they have to get close to the league glory again.

Gerrard’s personal performance in both the Premier League as well as in the World Cup was brilliant last season. Yes, he made a slight mistake in the World Cup group game against Uruguay which led to that second Luis Suarez goal, but, apart from that, he was flawless.

Despite that, at the end of the season, he found himself empty handed and that would have left him frustrated.
The kind of guy Gerrard is; he doesn’t like to bring out his frustration in public. He is very calm and collected.

But, in the interviews that he has given after that World Cup debacle, he has looked deeply hurt and rightly so because the time is almost running out for him to win a big tournament.

There is no doubt that the player of his calibre deserves silverwares. He has been a true legend of the game having made close to 500 English top tier appearances along with 114 international appearances.
